New initiative by CDSCO: Braille Labelling
In a move aimed at improving accessibility for visually impaired persons, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is considering the introduction of Braille labelling on medicine packaging. The initiative, currently proposed as a voluntary measure, is designed to help those with visual impairments identify and use medications more easily.
The proposal, released by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), Dr. Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, also suggests incorporating QR codes linked with voice-enabled assistance to further support users who are blind or partially sighted. Public feedback, particularly from industry stakeholders, has been invited on the proposed guidelines.

In Compliance with DCC Recommendations
These recommendations stem from a sub-committee formed by the DCGI, following a directive from the Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC) during a meeting held on July 14, 2020. The committee was tasked with exploring solutions to make medication more accessible to the visually impaired.
According to the sub-committee’s report, Braille labelling should initially be introduced on a voluntary basis, specifically for medicines packaged in mono-carton formats. Special attention is recommended for products that are more likely to be used by visually impaired patients for example, ophthalmic medications like eye drops. Significantly ,the proposed Braille labels would not apply to products administered directly by healthcare professionals, such as injectables and vaccine.
